Dear AP Student, Parent, and Guardian,
Due to the ongoing pandemic and the fact that many schools have both virtual and in-person learning this year, College Board is offering schools the opportunity to administer AP exams in both an in-person, paper format, and digitally from home.
I have attached the test schedule of the Odyssey High School-specific AP Exam dates and times to the bottom of this letter. Odyssey High School students will test during Administration 1, which are paper and pencil exams, in school. This will allow us to hold to the original AP Exam schedule and format that our faculty and students have been preparing for all year. Please make sure your calendars are updated with these dates and times (calendar below). After careful consideration with the Administration, AP Teachers, and the Testing Coordinator, we have put forth a plan that we believe is in the best interest of our students. All safety precautions will be taken to ensure the safety and security of all students.
For students who cannot attend Administration 1, they will be given the option to test at home during Administration 2 and 3. Any student participating in Administration 2 or 3 must be assigned by the school-based AP Coordinator (Mr. Smyth). Students cannot choose to take the Digital exam without communication with the AP Coordinator (Mr. Smyth). Administration 2 and 3 will only be at home digital exams. Digital exams will be available for any student that requests special consideration to test remotely or for any scheduling conflicts in Administration 1. A few important notes about testing Administration 2 and 3:
- All Administration 2 and 3 exams will be digital. Digital exams are administered synchronously, across all time zones. The start time of the exams will be either 12:00 p.m. or 4:00 p.m. EDT. Please prepare accordingly.
- Administration 2 & 3 will be after seniors have graduated and underclassmen will be out of school (or the last week of school for Admin 2). Scores will be available in August.
- Students who miss Administration 1 for Statistics or Calculus AB will test during Administration 3. Statistics and Calculus AB are not offered digitally during Administration 2.
All tests (paper and digital) will be full-length, 3+ hour exams. This is not a change in information this year, but they will be significantly different from 2020’s digital AP exams (which were 45 minutes long). If taking an exam digitally, this would require a student to log in, at a minimum, 30 minutes prior to the start of the exam. It is important to ensure a distraction-free testing environment for the entirety of the 3+ hour exam.
Here are some general tech items that have been shared so far:
- For digital exams – you will need a Windows or Mac computer. Only school-managed Chromebooks will work for the digital exams.
- For digital exams – you will not be able to return to a question once you have moved (whether answered or unanswered) beyond the question.
- You will not be able to take an exam on a phone or tablet this year (a change since 2020).
- While you will need an internet connection for the digital exams – The College Board has said that it doesn’t need to be “consistent”. This means that spotty internet or slow connection speeds should not impact the digital tests.
Please note: These variations in testing format do not impact your scoring, grading or availability of receiving college credit for a passed exam. Some items of an in-person exam simply cannot be replicated or secured via a digital exam platform.
These changes and updates are still new to us at Odyssey High School, and we will continue to update you as details emerge.
We appreciate your flexibility, understanding, and patience with us as we adapt and adhere to the new AP expectations in an ever-changing environment. Please update your calendars with the new dates now.
If you have any questions about the above items – please feel free to reach out.
Thank you,
Robert Bulger Smyth
