CGCS-Bernard Harris Scholarship

The 2021 CGCS-Bernard Harris Scholarship Program is accepting applications!!!

The CGCS-Bernard Harris Scholarship Program was established to encourage minority students to pursue college degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The scholarship was created by former NASA astronaut Dr. Bernard Harris, the first African-American to walk in space.

Four scholarships for two boys and two girls, with a value of $5,000 each, will be awarded in June 2021 to two Black and two Hispanic students currently completing their senior year of high school in a member district of the Council of the Great City Schools (see list of member districts). Applicants must be accepted for full-time enrollment at a four-year college or university in the next academic year and pursuing a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM).

Applications should include evidence of the applicant’s academic achievement in high school, leadership skills or community service in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics and the applicant’s commitment to pursue a career in a STEM field. To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must have a minimum 3.0 unweighted grade point average and have been accepted as a full-time student at a four-year institution of higher education.

Applicants will have to submit a list of STEM courses taken, two one-page essays, a high school transcript and have two people complete a short recommendation form.
