I am pleased to welcome you as a participant of Odyssey Charter Schools’ Second Annual Parent Symposium, “Empowered Parents, Successful Students”.

The parents/guardians, students, faculty, and staff have contributed greatly to the school’s success; we would not be here if it weren't for you.

Writing to Read in Kindergarten and First Grade

In this session parents will learn how to help their child to read and write at the same time. Parents will learn techniques that will help their kindergarten and first students become good readers. Parents will learn how to teach their child to write complete sentences and practice reading what they write.

This presentation will help parents understand student needs, the cause of behavior, and risk for school failure. Strategies for working with difficult students will be presented as well as the 40 Developmental Assets.

Free Tools for Completing Online Projects

Presenter: Cory Plough

This presentation will showcase Web 2.0 tools that students can easily use to complete projects in their online courses. Tools focus on online applications that allow students to present their work to the world, rather than just their teacher. This session will also discuss how these sames tools promote collaboration and the sharing of ideas.

Technology can be huge in assisting students in school success. From finding information to creating information, we live in a time where student interests can drive teaching and learning. The tools are available and they are online and they are free. In this session learn how to leverage this power to help your student succeed in the world of online learning.

Presenter: Rawl C. Campbell-Dunn

In this session parents will learn and discuss strategies parents use to combat stress. How do you relax? What works and what doesn't work? Learn and practice relaxation techniques as a group.

Navigating Through eCollege

Presenter: Dan Reese

We will be assisting middle and high school parents in learning how they can navigate the eCollege platform in order to assist their students with success at Odyssey.


Tips on How to Succeed in an Online Science and Math Classes

Presenter: Andrea NooNoo

Presentation will focus on how to: 1) fully incorporate technology-based services for math and science courses; 2) utilize beneficial web resources; 3) schedule course workload and effectively manage students' time; 4) communicate with students' teachers; and 5) take advantage of assistance programs offered by Odyssey Charter High School.


Finding Success with the Odyssey Student

Presenter: Becky Wittig

Whether this is your first year with Odyssey or you have been in our program for a while this workshop will help you to become a better "teacher" for your child. Strategies will be given to help you study your child. Learning styles, scheduling, encouragement, motivation and the learning environment will be discussed. This workshop is appropriate for parents of students in grades k-8.


Transitioning to the Eighth Grade Program

Presenter: Karen Tanaka

The focus of this session will be on the importance of parental involvement in the Eighth Grade Program. Parents will get the opportunity to preview eClassroom and the different programs for the eighth grade child.




Testing, “Bring It On!”

Presenter: Elaine Mastracchio

This session will discuss a parents' role in Nevada testing.


The Teenage Brain: Research and Reality

Presenters: Belinda Shillingburg and Glenn Moses

Dissemination and understanding brain research applied to teenagers inclusive of a discussion on the clinical reasons why teenagers think and act they way they do; sharing realistic and relevant solutions with parents on dealing with teenage children.

The Adolescent Brain

2 Kinds of Tests, 2 Kinds of Knowledge

Presenter: Janet Anthony

In this session parents will learn about the two kinds of testing student regularly encounter. Content based testing is chosen by teachers. Mandated literacy testing is selected by the government to compare a student's achievement with that of his/her peers. Understanding the differences affects the way we help student prepare. This is a condensed version of PAT's "If you're In Middle School You've Gotta take This Workshop.


Ensuring Success in the K-7 Program: A Parent’s Perspective

There are may simple techniques that you can follow to ensure your child's success in the k-7 Odyssey Charter School program. This presentation will give you a parent's perspective on how to best meet the needs of your k-7 child while attending Odyssey Charter School.

Premier Assistive Software

Presenter: Joe Panico

Premier Assistive Technology software suite provides a learning advantage for students who need assistance with reading, spelling, or who are visually impaired. The software reads out loud text on the web and text from any other software.

High School Graduation and Beyond

Presenters: Emily Koepnick and Ernie Fera

Learn the State of Nevada graduation requirements for your student. Become acquainted with the difference between minimum graduation versus college (State of Nevada University system) admission requirements. Also, receive information on how to seek out employment and careers through the Nevada Career Information System website.

How a Young Child Thinks

Presenters: Becky Wittig and Janet Anthony

The manner in which young children think will be investigated during this workshop. Piaget's reserach regarrding child development will be discussed and then practical activites will be shared. (examples: math manipulative activities, games, and centers for science, reading, and language arts)


Inviting Success, Communication is the Key

Presenters: Dr. Michele Robinson and Dr. Julie Charles

This workshop will address the importance of parent/child communication and success in school and life. Strategies to communicate respect and the use of "door openers" to facilitate communication will be introduced. The importance of parents as role models will be explored. This workshop will emphasize communication, issues of safety, consistence, and the traits of successful people.


Embrace MySpace – Safe Uses of Social Networking Tools

Presenter: Glenn Moses

If your student is going online, and all students for this school are, then they are using social networking tools. Why? What's the allure? Where's the power? In this session the power of social networking will be discussed and information on how to use social networks safely will be explored.
