TEACHER FEATURE
Sue Huff was born and raised in Las Vegas, making her a true native of this wonderful place. She has one brother who has a daughter, and that daughter has two boys – which would make Sue a great aunt.

Sue received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Ed., her Master’s in Special Ed., and her certification is in Administration and Gifted and Talented Education. She was an administrator in the Clark County School District for six years, retired early, and then later chose Odyssey in order to return to her true love, teaching children.

For the first time in a long time, Sue does not have any pets, but she grew up having horses, dogs, cats, and chickens. Currently she feels lucky to have “Shilo”, (a friend’s horse) to ride, care for, and love. Shilo was once owned by Las Vegas’ very own Wayne Newton! Riding is her favorite hobby. She also once prepared horses for racetracks across the United States.

Sue enjoys playing racquetball, tennis, and golf. She also enjoys watching sports and traveling to professional football and baseball games, as well. Her favorite foods are sushi, seafood, organic foods, and “good food” of any kind.

She loves Hawaii, but her favorite place to travel is Belize. There she finds the locals to be very open-hearted people, who treat their traveling guests like family.

Sue is passionate about having fun, and her motto is that if she is not having fun, she’s not doing it the right way. She spends much of her time riding horses at the Red Rock Mountain area where nature abounds. During the spring, she says that flowers are blooming, the natural springs running, and that one can always hear the beautiful sounds of the great outdoors. Red Rock is home to coyotes, turtles, lizards, big horn rams, ground squirrels, and snakes (which is the only thing she doesn’t like).

Sue really loves teaching at Odyssey and says that teachers and staff work together with the goal of student success in mind. She says that each family receives individual attention by the professional team at OCS enhancing each child’s education. Sue loves partnering with parents to find the learning style of each individual student. She stated, “At Odyssey our methods of teaching show parents how their children can learn in ways that they may have never imagined.” Ms. Huff very much enjoys her collaboration with other Odyssey teachers as well.

Sue shared, “I love to see my students with a sparkle in their eye when they look up at me and say, ‘Ms. Huff, I finally got it!’” Ms. Huff herself has that same sparkle when she speaks of her students!

A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Odyssey Charter School students are starting the year off with vim and vigor! School-wide, our accomplishments in the first two months of 2010 are plentiful.

January saw our fifth grade students complete the writing proficiency exam with the expected 100% attendance! Congratulations to everyone who assisted our students, helping them feel comfortable throughout the entire experience. A special “thank you” to our very own PAT facilitator, Mrs. Diane Kelly, for her fine work during this exam period.

We have almost concluded our eighth grade writing proficiency exams with the expected 100% attendance as well. Under the guidance of their incredible English teacher, Mrs. Cheryl Anderson, our students’ success is greatly anticipated.

Mrs. Dunlop, our testing coordinator, has been hard at work not only scheduling all the exams, but also securing the highly anticipated movie ticket reward that all students in grades 3-8 can expect upon completion of the CRT exams! Popcorn, anyone?

Also noteworthy is the first edition of the eighth grade literary magazine, available for reading on our website! Congratulations to our students on their accomplishment.

Finally, our tutoring program with Club Z is in full swing for fifty-one of our targeted middle school students. Students were identified as candidates for extra tutoring during a month long period, and families accepted with resounding support for the program. Thank you to all of the families who have welcomed the tutors into their homes, and committed to the additional work and time the program requires. You are all superstars!

We are gearing up for some fun and relaxing events in the spring including our K-7 family barbeque, the grade 8 year-end event, and other school-wide happenings. Read about these events in the next newsletter.

From the entire staff, I wish you a happy February.

Dr. Julie Charles
